lyrics

I went down to Mississippi
With just my brother in tow
It was a place I didn't think of
It was a place I didn't know

We first stopped in New Orleans
Saw some friends along the way
Walked up and down Saint Charles
Hoping the rain would go away

Will the streetcar ever come?
Did that hand grenade have rum?
We sipped on Bourbon and ate beignets
Down to the last crumb

America the free
America the brave
Saw the flying of Confederate flags
And the men who put 'em in their graves

Now, the big city's alright for me
But I miss Mississippi sometimes

Crossed the border
Into the state of which we speak
For maybe just a day or two
But we probably could've stayed the week

Our canopy was blue
With specks of white painted on the scene
We chugged along the highway
Houses few and far between

The Rebels won the game
The Grove came into frame
We spent all night with the fair-haired of the south
Without a name

When it was time to leave
We packed our things and said goodbye
And headed on to Memphis
With a twinkle in our eye

I miss Mississippi sometimes
